A nifty trick to remind yourself of something that needs to be done

Here is a great way to remember to do something:

Call your voice mail and tell yourself what it is you need to remember to do.

When you get home, listen to the voice mail, and the reminder will be there.

Nifty trick, eh?

Punitive Damages?

The Supreme Court of West Virginia held:

Generally, [punitive damages] fall into three categories:
(1) really stupid defendants;
(2) really mean defendants; and
(3) really stupid defendants who could have caused a great deal of harm by their actions but who actually caused minimal harm.

Return to Sender

US immigration authorities deport 450
after
California sweep of illegals

Wednesday, January 24, 2007
by Joshua Pantesco

Over 450 illegal immigrants out of over 750 taken into custody have already been deported by US immigration authorities after a week-long crackdown in five counties in southern California, officials at the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Tuesday. Of those taken into custody, 338 were arrested in residential raids and 423 were identified while in jail for other crimes. Those now serving sentences will be transferred to federal detention facilities and will not be deported until finishing their sentences. ICE said in a press statement:

The seven-day effort is the largest single enforcement action carried out nationwide so far under Operation Return to Sender, an ongoing ICE initiative targeting criminal aliens, foreign nationals with final orders of deportation, and other immigration violators. Since its launch in June 2006, Operation Return to Sender has resulted in more than 13,000 arrests nationwide. During that same time period, ICE has also lodged nearly 3,000 immigration detainees against criminal aliens incarcerated in state and local jails across the country ensuring they will come into ICE custody when they complete their sentences.

Begin with Persuasion

The first paragraph in your brief after a heading can be a wonderful opportunity to persuade your reader -- the Judge -- to rule for your client. Rather than a dull restatement of the procedural history and the relevant legal principles, why not catch the Judge's attention with a snappy intorduction to set the stage for your client's story?
